RTO Charges for Used Cars in Rajasthan

Buying a used car can save you a lot of money compared to buying a new car. But before buying a second-hand car in Rajasthan, you should also check the extra costs. Apart from the car price, you may need to pay RTO charges, RC transfer fees and applicable taxes.

Many buyers search for RTO charges for used cars in Rajasthan because they want to know how much extra they may have to spend after buying the car. The main thing to understand is that there is no fixed RTO amount for every used car. The amount can change based on the vehicle type, engine size, tax rules and whether the car is already registered in Rajasthan or comes from another state.

What Are RTO Charges for a Used Car?

RTO charges are the fees and taxes related to your vehicle’s registration and ownership transfer. When you buy a used car, the RC (Registration Certificate) has to be transferred from the seller’s name to your name. This is called ownership transfer.

In simple words:

Buy used car → Transfer ownership → Update RC → Pay applicable fees and taxes

The Rajasthan Transport Department has a separate process for ownership transfer and has also listed the forms and documents required for it.

How Much Is the RC Transfer Fee in Rajasthan?

When you buy a used car in Rajasthan, the Registration Certificate (RC) has to be transferred from the seller’s name to the buyer’s name. This process is called ownership transfer. For a normal private car, the Rajasthan Transport Department lists the registration fee at ₹600. The ownership transfer fee is half of this amount.

So, the basic charges are:

  • Registration fee: ₹600
  • Ownership transfer fee: ₹300

This means the basic RC transfer fee for a used car is ₹300.

But remember, ₹300 is only the basic transfer fee. It is not the total RTO cost for every used car. Other taxes or charges may apply depending on the car, its registration details and tax history. Also, Rajasthan started issuing e-RC instead of smart-card RCs from 1 April 2024. So, the old ₹200 smart-card fee should not be added to the current 2026 calculation.

What Additional Tax Can Apply When Transferring a Used Car?

The ₹300 RC transfer fee is only one part of the total cost. An additional tax can also apply when the ownership of a used car is transferred. The important thing is that this tax is not simply calculated on the current selling price of the car. It is linked to the one-time tax paid when the car was originally registered.

For example, suppose a petrol car with an engine capacity between 801 cc and 1200 cc had a taxable cost of ₹8 lakh when it was registered. If the applicable one-time tax was 9%, the tax would be:

₹8,00,000 × 9% = ₹72,000

Now, if the transfer tax applicable to that vehicle is 10% of the one-time tax paid, the additional tax would be:

₹72,000 × 10% = ₹7,200

Along with the basic RC transfer fee:

  • RC transfer fee: ₹300
  • Additional transfer tax: ₹7,200
  • Basic total: ₹7,500

So, if the same car is currently being sold for ₹6 lakh, you should not simply calculate 10% of ₹6 lakh. The calculation is linked to the vehicle’s one-time tax and registration details, not just its current used-car price. The exact amount can be different from one vehicle to another. It can depend on the car’s original registration, tax already paid and the tax rules applicable at the time of transfer. Before completing the purchase, it is always better to check the exact payable amount with the Rajasthan Transport Department or the concerned RTO.

Rajasthan One-Time Tax for Private Cars

Rajasthan has different one-time tax rates for private four-wheeled vehicles. The rate depends mainly on the engine capacity and fuel type. According to the Rajasthan government’s July 10, 2024 notification, the published rates for private four-wheeled non-transport vehicles are:

rajasthan one time tax for private cars
Engine CapacityPetrol/CNG/LPG/SolarDiesel
Up to 800 cc6%8%
More than 800 cc to 1200 cc9%11%
More than 1200 cc10%12%

These rates are related to the one-time tax at the time of registration. For a used car, this does not mean that the buyer simply pays the same percentage again on the current second-hand car price. The transfer tax rules are connected with the one-time tax paid at registration. So, the actual amount should be checked for the particular vehicle.

What Documents Are Required for RC Transfer?

Before starting the RC transfer process, keep the required documents ready.

For a normal ownership transfer, you may need:

  • Form 29 – Notice of transfer of ownership
  • Form 30 – Application for transfer of ownership
  • Original RC
  • Valid vehicle insurance
  • PAN copy or Form 60, where applicable
  • Tax-paid/tax clearance certificate
  • Address proof
  • Passport-size photographs
  • Financier NOC, if the car has a loan or hypothecation
  • Vehicle inspection, where required

If the car is registered in another state, additional documents such as Form 28 NOC may also be required. It is better to check all documents before making the final payment.

How Long Does Used Car Ownership Transfer Take?

The Rajasthan Transport Department has specified timelines for reporting the ownership transfer. For a vehicle already registered in Rajasthan, the seller should report the transfer within 14 days. For a vehicle registered in another state, the seller has 45 days to report the transfer.

The buyer should apply for the ownership transfer within 30 days. In simple words, don’t delay the RC transfer after buying the car. Complete the process as soon as possible so that the RC is updated in your name.

What If You Buy a Used Car From Another State?

Buying a used car from another state can involve a few extra steps. For example, if you buy a car registered in Delhi, Haryana, Gujarat or another state and want to bring it to Rajasthan, you may need an NOC and some additional documents. Rajasthan tax and registration rules can also apply depending on the vehicle and its previous registration.

So, if you are looking at RTO charges for a used car from another state, don’t check only the RC transfer fee. First check the complete tax, NOC, registration and other applicable costs. This is especially important when buying a second-hand car from another state because the total cost can be different from a car already registered in Rajasthan.

Do Used Cars Have Green Tax in Rajasthan?

Green tax can be an important cost for older vehicles. It can become applicable at certain stages, such as registration renewal, depending on the vehicle and applicable rules. The Rajasthan Transport Department has published green-tax rates for non-transport vehicles.

The rates can depend on factors such as the fuel type and engine capacity. So, if you are buying an old used car, it is a good idea to check whether any green tax or renewal-related payment is due. Don’t assume that green tax is automatically charged on every used-car ownership transfer.

Who Pays the RTO Charges When Buying a Used Car?

There is no need to make this complicated. The buyer and seller should clearly decide who will pay which charges before completing the deal. In many used-car deals, the buyer handles the ownership transfer process. But any pending tax, challan, loan, NOC issue or other dues should be checked before the purchase.

Before buying the car, check:

RC + Insurance + Tax + Challan + Loan/Hypothecation + NOC

This simple check can help you avoid problems after buying the car.

Final Words

Buying a used car in Rajasthan is not only about finding the right car at the right price. You should also understand the RTO charges, RC transfer fee, applicable taxes, insurance and any pending dues before completing the deal. The basic ownership transfer fee for a normal private car is ₹300, but the total RTO cost can vary depending on the vehicle,

its registration details and the taxes that apply. If you are buying a used car in Jaipur or anywhere in Rajasthan, checking the documents and RTO requirements in advance can help you avoid unexpected costs and paperwork issues later. For cars coming from another state, make sure you also check the NOC, tax and registration requirements.
